IPL has become the new age festival that unites over 400+million people together across the nation with a vast diversity in region and religion. Having completed 12 editions IPL still makes its fans go crazy over their favorite teams. With each team having its own strong fanbase, the fight over their favorite teams happens all over the internet(especially Twitter). Having 12 years of IPL data made me do these beautiful insights and analysis.

Since I am a huge fan of IPL and cricket, I have created 15 stats and visualizations using data visualization tools like pandas, matplotlib, and seaborn. The data are downloaded for Kaggle and processed in Jupyter notebook. Now we will jump directly into the 15 stats that are derived from the data.

15. IPL’s MOST SUCCESSFUL TEAM

Without any doubt, from the stats below, we can conclude that the new name changed franchise Delhi Capitals led by Shreyas Iyer and Ricky Ponting is doing a pretty good job with the highest win ratio of 62.5%. But in the case of cumulative records, Chennai Super Kings led by our Captain Cool MS Dhoni is the most successful IPL team with 61%. The Pune Warriors stays in the last place with the lowest win percentage of 26.1%.

14. TEAM WITH MORE NUMBER OF WINS

Any IPL fan would know the answer to this question, Mumbai Indians has the most number of wins in the IPL with a total of 109 wins. Whereas Chennai Super Kings still managed to secure the second place even after 2 years of a ban in IPL(2016&2017).

13. CHENNAI SUPER KINGS BATTING STATS

Chennai Super Kings, being the most successful franchise in IPL history and my most favorite team, I decided to analyze the biggest contributors to the CSK’s success journey. In terms of the batting line-up, Suresh Raina has contributed the most runs(4,574 runs) followed by MS Dhoni(3,903 runs) and M.Hussey(1,768runs) altogether summing up to a grand total of 26,418runs.

12. CHENNAI SUPER KINGS BOWLING STATS

Chennai Super Kings have never failed to give their fans a heart attack by defending a really low score and the reason behind this is obviously their talented bowlers who create miracles in the pitch. Let see CSK’s bowling insights in wicket-taking over the years of IPL. Bravo remains their favorite bowler cum dancer in this segment with a whopping 104 wickets.

11. TOP IPL TEAMS BATTING COMPARISION

In terms of fandom and strong dominance in IPL, 4 teams CSK, MI, SRH, and KKR have always showcased their strong presence by winning matches and winning IPL trophies. These 4 teams are compared with their batting averages per inning over the years of IPL. Conclusions state that CSK and MI have a better batting line up when compared to the rest 2 teams. Is this the reason for the 2 teams to be the most successful teams over the years? Noticed the pitfall in CSK’s 2019 season, can this be the reason for CSK’s loss in the season?

10. TOP IPL TEAMS BOWLING COMPARISION

Bowlers are considered to be the game changers in IPL. In this strong hitting format of cricket, a good bowler creates a breakthrough for the team and creates a huge impact on the opponent’s team by building pressure on the opponent’s batsmen. The below stats shows average wickets taken per innings in each season of IPL. All the teams merely have the same range of wickets per season but CSK managed to have little higher mean value over the other teams.

9. CSK Vs MI ANALYSIS

Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings are the biggest rivalries in IPL. Below we compare CSK’s and MI’s bowling and batting records exclusively. The blue-colored line represents wickets per inning with its scale on the right and the red-colored line represents runs per inning with its scale on the left.

If you build an army of 100 lions and their leader is a dog, in any fight, the lions will die like a dog. But if you build an army of 100 dogs and their leader is a lion, all dogs will fight like a lion.

This is true for CSK, the team always managed to win the title even with the most average team led by Captain Cool. For MI there is a shark spike in both batting and bowling in 2013, 2015, 2017 over previous years which was the reason behind Rohit Sharma’s odd year title-winning.

8. BEST BATTING AND BOWLING PITCH

IPL has taken place in 31 different places including foreign pitches. For this pitch analysis, we have chosen 8 most played pitches across India. The middle line in the figure represents the most expected score and the colored area represent the expected range of scores and wicket respectively.

We can sense that Bangalore has the highest range of score, the reason for this is Bangalore’s stadium is comparatively smaller in size hence the boundary is shorter. Mumbai follows Bangalore’s pitch making one of the best pitch for batting. Kolkata has the most versatile batting pitch which supports little bowling in the initial and supports batting in rest. This is the reason it has most the longest line compared to other graphs.

The best bowling pitch is undoubtedly the Chennai’s MA Chidambaram pitch, it has got the shortest range in the figure along with the highest mean value of 6.11 wickets per inning. This pitch is too dry which makes it too dangerous to predict the ball’s turning in this ground.

7. MOST NUMBER OF DOT BALLS

The highest number of dot balls bowled in a season is 211 balls by the South African fast bowler Dale Steyn in 2013 for the Hyderabad team followed by Deepak Chahar of Chennai.

The highest number of dot balls bowled in IPL is 1244 balls by Harbhajan Singh followed by Mumbai’s favorite Sri Lankan bowler Lasith Malinga with 1144 dot deliveries.

6. MOST & LEAST NUMBER OF NO BALLS BOWLED

Centimeters of mistake still manages to create a big hazard in the matches. Mumbai Indian’s fast bowler Bumrah has spared 23 runs in no-ball which is the most and in the opposite stands Axer Patel who has never spared an extra run via no-ball. Lasith Malinga stands 4th in the list. We have seen Malinga in the previous list of most dot deliveries. This proves everything comes with a price.

5. MOST ECONOMIC BOWLER OF IPL

By bowling the most number of dots Dale Steyn has also managed to take place in the list of the most economic bowlers. Spinners Muralitharan and Kumble secures second and third place respectively.

4. MOST PLAYER OF THE MATCH AWARDS

West Indian big-hitter Chris Gayle has bagged 21 man of the match awards and AB De Villiers stands at the second position with 20 man of the match awards. Not to forget both the batsmen currently play for the same RCB franchise.

3. MOST NUMBER OF CATCHES

Wicket Keeper Dinesh Karthik has secured the most number of catches(109 catches) followed by one of India’s best fielder Suresh Raina with 98 catches.

Highest number of catches in IPL

2. TOSS WIN TO MATCH WIN PERCENTAGE

The Average toss-to-match winning percentage is 52%. Winning toss has helped teams like Gujarat Lions, Delhi Capitals to win a huge number of matches when they win toss whereas there are teams like SRH and MI which have lost toss many times but still managed win a lot of matches. The toss still has got little advantage.

1.BATTING FIRST: BATTING SECOND WIN RATIO

Out of 743 IPL matches with results, 392 times team batting second has won the match whereas team batting second has won 350 times. So is batting second provides a fair advantage for the teams?

Now coming to conclusion, do these stats determine the winning side or help to build a winning side?

The answer is a big YES. Mumbai Indians team’s success X-Factor is nothing but statistics. The team and their captain Rohit Sharma are hugely in love with Statistics which have made them win 4 number of trophies in IPL which is the highest. So ultimately, data can be used to produce a real winning side!
